You are close to solving it.
The ATS 2500 GTS was used as the basis of this car.
It was constructed a year or two after the 2500 GTS was launched.
An Italian then modified it considerably and named it ATS-??????  19?? specifically for racing.
Anyway, locked for you for 24 hrs for your reply.
Ciao

So is this the ATS 2500GT designed by Michelotti (as opposed to the Scaglione-designed, Allemano-built 2500GTS)?  The car that later went on to be developed into the Serenissima?

I've read that this 2500 gt 3.0 was designed by Scaglione not Michelotti;
so, in 1963 when the ATS failed, mr Volpi took the last four chassis to make a new sport car that became into the Serenissima (with 3.000 cc engine).

Carnut & Thorax,
My sources are in Italian (not a language that I speak) regarding this particular car but I can give you a few clues to help.
I believe that this particular ATS is similar to that developed into the Serenissima but it was developed for racing by another constructor. The size of the engine was 1994cc (possibly reduced from the original 2467cc) to compete in the 2 litre class.
A big clue is that it was driven in a certain event by "Giasco" and Zaniratti.
Just a word of warning - I have seen the car described in an English language book as being an ATS 2500 GT 1963 - that is clearly incorrect.

So it must be the Scotti-ATS 2000?
The "Giasco" in your clue being GIAncarlo SCOtti, who developed the car then drove it (along with Franco Zaniratti) in the Sports-Racing 2000 Class at Mugello in 1965, coming 31st.

That's the car!
I have it as ATS-Scotti 2000 built by Giancarlo Scotti at Firenze.
The car was later modified with new bodywork and a larger engine but I'll keep those details for a later puzzle I think.

Anyway, well done Carnut and another point for you.

Info as I found it (in Italian on an Italian website!):

Luigi Malanca - Luigi Foschi (OSCA MT4 1500 # 72), 26th overall, winner Sports-Racing 2000. Background: Sullo sfondo, Giancarlo Scotti - Franco Zaniratti (Scotti - ATS # 61), 31st overall

Was your original puzzle picture also at Mugello?
Did you remove the #61 before posting?
Would be interested to know if there are pictures around of it racing elsewhere!

Beautiful car. Pity that ATS did exist for such a little time. I bet they would be very successful if they wouldn't hurry to take their place in F1 field.

I agree faksta, that was their downfall - the poor preparation and performance of their F1 cars.
If only they had stuck with road-going and sports racing cars, the story may have been different.

Carnut - no I didn't touch the original puzzle photo.
It was apparently taken outside Giancarlo Scotti's Fiat concessionaria in Firenze.
These are the only two photos I have come across of the car in it's original configuration.

Next year, in 1966 it competed at several events namely:
Viterbo-Poggio Nibbio (3rd. in class)
Stallavena-Boscochiesanuova (6th. in class)
Coppa della Collina (3rd. in class)
Coppa Citta di Volterra (2nd. in class)

The car was progressively modified until 1969 when it competed in the Coppa della Collina driven by Rafaello Rosati.
He finished 5th.

I do have a photo of the car in its final configuration and will post it here soon.
I'll also look for other photos of the car in my library.
