There are 1669 of these things? That is freakin' amazing!   :o

Looks like a Cosworth DFX Formula One engine to me. But I've never actually SEEN a Cosworth DFX Formula One engine, so pay me no mind!   :D

Not one of those. This was am adaptation of an engine from a seemingly less-likely brand; one not usually associated with international road racing.

Oldsmobile once built a four cam V-8 that was too big to put into any of their cars.  Pretty sure this isn't, is it?

Not AMC, but that's much closer than Trabant. Yes, this is an American (mostly) brand.

While not a huge presence in international racing, Chevy engines were used in Can-Am, Formula 5000, and in Jim Hall's Chaparrals.

So, not a Chevrolet.

You are the master of the obscure, sir. That clue, if one may call it that, caused me to put my thinking cap on. But I always fall asleep when I have my thinking cap on, so that was the end of that!   ;D

If we eliminate Chevy and Ford and AMC, who else in America could build an engine like this?  Studebaker, perhaps????

Maybe you should Google Studebaker racing engines and start reading and researching.  Then, after you find the answer, you could write an article about Stude racing engines.

That's a good idea! Now, why the hell didn't I think of that?!!??!?!    :-[

Probably part of it is that I have about run out the string with Examiner.com. My current remuneration amounts to pennies a day. Funk that. I am planning to transition to Associated Content, but it is going to take me a while to get comfortable with how they do things over there. But it's coming.

I'll tuck your idea away for future use.

Willie Utzman (no relation) developed this DOHC V8 in 1952. He ran this engine in J.C. Agajanian's #97 Kuzma dirt car during that year (including at the Speedway). While powerful, the car constantly destroyed starter shafts, and never qualified for any of the races for which it was entered.

Oh, I should have recognized that one.  Two of these engines are in the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska.

From what i recall from the book "History of the Indy Car", Willie Utzman built this 331 hemi, with 4 valve heads. It made about 330 hp, and good torque, on alcohol. It was campaigned at Indy...don't recall the year......but a broken crank first time out, and was apparently never raced again. I recall the pic, because it's one of the prettiest motors I've ever seen!!

Er..... I meant to say DOHC, not necessarily 4 valve.
