This car from 1981 was an exercise in panel body manufacturing. Devised by Fiat and realised by I.DE.A with input from an architect Renzo Piano, the VSS (Veicolo Sperimentale a Sottosistemi) was based on Ritmo but featured a no-load bearing body made of 9 plastic panels, mounted on a steel spaceframe. This solution allowed for a greater flexibility in terms of shape, production and assembly as well as reduced weight.
