Scramble? (I seem to recall Jeep using this name, and it certainly used Scrambler, but I guess that is too many letters)

Starts with an "s", means roughly the same as "scram".

Not 'split'

The name is a creatively misspelled version of a common word, and hints at the intended mechanical makeup of the vehicle

Need more than that, but you've ID'd the brand.

 :shiner:

I've screwed up again - not a Jeep; an intended competitor to Jeep, that would later become redundant.

But Aaron' on the right track, and the puzzle remains locked for him.

Sincere apology. I plan to take a brief vacation before the month is out. I trust I will do better, after a rest.

Hmmm.  Not a Jeep--I think it's a Chrysler product, probably Dodge branded.  I think the name is Skaat, withe the "AT" probably being "all terrain."

You know what, that's close enough.

This is the Chrysler Skatt - (the 'K' was a tie-in to the 2.2 litre engine and other bits). This 4x4 was proposed as a competitor to the Jeep CJ/Wrangler. Strapped for cash in 1980, the car never went beyond this one full-size prototype. When Chrysler bought the Jeep brand in 1987, the Skatt's fate was sealed.
