(Despite the sarcastic undercurrent to the above, I actually rather like it. It has a touch of modern-day Royale Sabre about it...).

Correct.  Well done.  I see what you mean about the Royale Sabra similarity.  As the MX-5 get progressively uglier, this may be the best thing to do with the Mazda.  On second thought,s though perhaps not..!
