I've never seen a picture of one, but I have heard of a car called the Earnshaw Diamond which has a diamond-shaped wheelbase like this one.

Could that be it?

It was, although it wasn't that clear (to me) at the time. 
At least not until they published a record of the spoof factory visit.

I was only a teenager.  What did I know about cars?  I bought an Austin Allegro!
