Allan has a fair bit of HRG knowledge. Perhaps he can close this one out.

I don't think I have!

I'm sure I've seen this somewhere, but the only HRG I can't find a photo of at present is the Vauxhall VX4/90-engined car, sometimes referred to as the VX HRG.

I think that was a road car, while this one was intended for racing.

Yes! You should have come to this thread earlier :) Do you know why, having a Singer engine, it was still called Emperor - HRG?
Pity that in the beginning I though it was called an HRG Emperor  :-\

My book on Specialist British Sports/Racing cars says on this car: "Private owners were racing the HRGs with success in Club events throughout the 1950s and the last of the original square-rigged cars did not leve the HRG works until 1956. Although with the passing of the years HRG had turned more and more to other engineering work, the company had been carrying out development work on the Singer engine and produced a twin overhead camshaft cylinder head. David Bkaleky raced one of the ex-Le Mans cars fitted with one of these engines and he installed in his Emperor-HRG. The Emperor featured a tubular chassis, VW front suspension, deDion rear end and full-width aerodyanmic bodywork with prominent headrest. Blakely had driven this car into 2nd place in the 1500 cc race at the Boxing Day Brands Hatch meeting in 1954, it was a car of some promise and was being prepared for  afull 1955 season at the time Blakely was murdered.

Unfortunately no reason is given for the Emperor name

Strange. The Emperor is said to be a 1954 car, while the first Twin Cam HRG (well, according to Wikipedia :P ) has appeared in 1955. And they say that Blakely installed Twin Cam's engine in his special...  ??? At least now it's clear why the Emperor is said to be HRG engined, having in mind the above text. Thanks.

EDIT: I think Wikipedia was wrong. Thank God  :P

I mean, I have checked, and HRG Twin Cam is seemingly a 1954 car also  ;D .

Is this the usual story?  The new 1949 model was announced in 1948, often at the Motor Show.  Sometimes the first couple of cars might be sold and registerd in the earlier year.  So you get  "1955" cars manufactured and sold in 1954.

The converse applies at the end of a model run: the last car is manufactured in, say,  1960 but wasn't sold until 1961.

Yes, but both Emperor and HRG Twin Cam were, as far as I can judge, pure competition cars? Twin Cams ran at Le Mans in 1954 or 1955.

The earlier thread mentioned that the car's owner David Blakely was murdered. His is a famous name in the UK - he was shot by his lover in a "crime of passion", which unfortunately for her is not permissible in the UK, and she (Ruth Ellis) was the last woman in the UK to be executed for murder.
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia
