I don't know what it is at the time, but I think it's a swell idea to carry a spare wheel without a spare tire.

I've never seen a photo of one, but the 23.8 hp Arrol-Johnston of 1911 should look rather like that

I just had to try.

While Clement Bayard and Theophile Schneider are both possible to spell, but only once, using the letters in Allan L's first reply; there is no J in it, so it couldn't be Arrol-Johnson

Allrighty then.

This is the 1911-15 Cheswold, built by E.W. Jackson in Doncaster, England, and named after a local stream. This exact example is currently on display at the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery. Don't know of any model designation, though, it's only described as the Cheswold Car on the museum's web site, but it was a tourer, powered by a 15.9 hp, 2.612 cc 4-cylinder engine.

Today, the car in the picture looks like this (and you might be pleased to see that the spare tyre is again in place):

I'm a lot nearer Doncaster than you are, but I still admit to having never heard of the Cheswold before. The text you quote must be from Georgano where there is a photo of a different car with an earlier West Riding registration (C 5***).

Of couse I forgot the clue when posting A-J - more concerned with thinking about what it looked like (which it does).

I'll be honest and admit that I hadn't heard of Cheswold, either. But I thought I'd have a quick flip through the Encyclopedia just to see if any of the Renault-ish cars of that era looked similar enough to it - and what do you know, I didn't have to page through more than three letters

I think we all agree...that's a Cheswold 15.9 HP, the only model made by this manufacturer. Well done, and by the way I found 3 pics, with 3 different registrations: C9331, C4849 and C59**
