SOLVED: Djetset #100 - Calpine 2+2 Coupe
« on: April 24, 2009, 10:18:41 AM »
Some significant AutoPuzzle numbers for me today, with this being my 100th puzzle, 500th post and my 75th point.

So, to celebrate, please tell me all you can about this car, which the more observant amongst you will know is of particular interest to me.  And remember, things aren't always what they first seem!

Well it certainly looks like a Rene Bonnet/Matra Djet (and of course that would fit perfectly). I'm assuming theres more to it then that though so maybe a replica or a special version? (Either that or its your car). Congratulations on the milestones :).

Well done 250gto, as you're onto something, as this is neither a Rene-Bonnet Djet or MatraDjet/Jet.  I'll lock it for you for 48 hours.

I found the same picture on a VW website so I believe its VW based. Sadly the website is in Dutch (I think) which I do not speak so other details are a bit of a guess but I think its based on a VW Beetle 1600. I can't find mention of a specific make/model name so I'm assuming its a one-off special that dosen't have one.

Ohh, 250gto, you are so close again.  The car is based on a VW Beetle (Kafer, Kever, etc.) chassis, but it's not a one-off.  I'll lock it for you again for another 48 hours.

Any further ideas 250gto (or any other Rookies out there) before I move this beauty(!) on?  On, and by the way, it's definately not my car!!

Sorry I havn't been able to post recently...
Now that my computer has stopped telling me autopuzzles contains some horrible virus (no idea why it was doing that) and I can post again I can honestly say I have gotten almost nowhere towards a name. The guy who does own very kindly put all the details up on the forum I found it on (in Dutch which I had to try to translate) except the things name...
The only idea I did have was something by Fiberfab but if its not that (and I don't hold much hope) I'm giving up...

I admire your perserverance 250gto, but you should never give up, as the answer is out there somewhere!  It's not nothing to do with Fiberfab though.

The Dutch site is not very helpful indeed  :( And I guess it's quite difficult to understand, since there's a lot of abbreviations and colloquial speech. All I could find is what 250gto already found, and that the car was just called a 1975 Matra Djet Kitcar... And that it is one of six or seven prototypes of a planned production of the kitcar, that never really started.

DynaMike, you're right with the seven cars built, but I'm still looking for the name of the make, which seems to be proving more difficult than I expected.

Well done 75america, it is indeed a Calpine coupe, the Dutch VW Beetle-based 2+2 replica of (wait for it...!) an Alpine A110 (despite being moulded from a Matra Djet!).  You have a well-desrved point.

Yes, that's all I know about it, too. Maybe Djetset can add some details.  :)

Yes, I can happily add some details, as this is a Calpine, a repost (found here https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2009-37/solved-djetset-100-calpine-22-coupe/msg61799/#msg61799).

The Calpine was as a Dutch VW Beetle (Kever) based kit car, promoted as a replica of an Alpine A110 Berlinette (!) despite it clearly being a modified Matra Djet. The Calpine was a 2+2 made in the mid-1970s, it's body being identical to a Djet, except that the opening hatch tailgate was modified for a boot/engine cover to accommodate the rear-mounted VW engine. Within the Djet world, these atrocities are frowned upon (and probably even more so in the Alpine world), but thankfully only a handful were made, so at least they don't turn up too often! I guess it should now be merged.

Thanks for your additions, Gary. I didn't know its name, so couldn't identify it as a repost.
