Soh-dee-uhm Klawr-ahyd - Solved!
« on: April 17, 2009, 04:43:11 AM »
12 machines built for speed - lot's of speed. Setting outright speed records on salt (sodium chloride) and other surfaces. Many constructed by privateers, working in their spare time. Others constructed as testbeds or showcases of technology. How many can you identify?

As these are answered, I'll try to pepper this thread with a little information about each car - please add your own, too.

Better hurry - these will go fast!

Hmm I Think...
Salty 1 is the Flying Caduceus of Dr Nathan Ostich
Salty 8 is the Wingfoot Express of (I think) Walt Arfons

Ahhh...the Bonneville Salt Flats, eh?

I can't say I know any of these, but I suspect if I asked a buddy of mine who takes pics at the Bonneville Salt Flats, I'd probably find out most, if not all, of 'em....

it was seeing the Redhead in The Worlds Fastest Indian and thinking i could find out more on the internet which led to me doing this and wasting my life!
ran by Lattin and Gillette from 1976 until retired 1991, it was.
SCTA/BNI record mph 213.554 class xxf/gs (gasoline), 1990, but best was (1966 @ 331 which could not be confirmed by a second, return run so ...) 1963 - 302.812 mph, class b/s, running a blown 394 ci Chrysler
( later, after a Chev' , Hammon ran with a Daimler 156 - ?)

Oh, #9 isn't solved yet? I remember it from an old (1986? 89?) edition of the Guinness Book of Records, where it was listed as the world's fastest steam-driven car, called the Barber-Nichols 'Steamin' Demon'. It did 145.607 mph at Bonneville in 1985.

That's not the name I have.

By the way, "Racingoll Racing" is a photo-shopped mangling of the name of the shop that built it. It's actually _ _ _ _ oll Racing (fill in the blanks)
