SF#1: SOLVED Pierre Levegh & Bristol Fighter
« on: February 04, 2009, 12:30:57 AM »
My first puzzle question!  See who can work this out.

For one point, identify both the man in the photo, and the car in the other photo.

For a bonus point, name the historical event that connects the man with the car, and why.

I  know the car of course, but have no idea who the guy is.
It's not denial, I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

Could the event linking them be Goodwood Festival of Speed? I know that car was in it two years ago IIRC...

I could be wrong, but having some very inside knowledge of the Bristol display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed I don't think this gentlemen has any connection to the car.

However, could the chap be Mr Frank Barnwell, the designer of the original Bristol Fighter aircraft from c.1917 (but sadly not the Bristol Fighter car as pictured!)?
A car is for life, not just for Christmas.

The event in question was indeed a speedy festival, but (Mon Dieu!) not Goodwood.

You've got the car, but not the man.

I think the man in the picture is Pierre Levegh AKA Pierre Bouillin, the French racing driver who was involved in the 1955 Le Mans disaster.

The only connection I can find between him and the Bristol is that as a result of the accident Bristol (who finished first, second, and third in class in that race with the 450) withdrew from racing.

Right you are!  Pierre Levegh died in the crash, and Bristol never took to the track again.

2 points for you! :)

Wow! I'm not sure if I'm more impressed about the correct ID of the gentleman pictured or figuring out the connection correctly! Either way: well done!
