The whole thing, including the numberplate, looks British to me, and quite resembles a D-Type, but somehow I think I'll hear 'no connection with D-Type'. Was it built by some manufacturer at all or was it just some privateer's idea?

I agree it's a British numberplate.
It's a lot smaller than a D-type, though as you say styled to look that way.
Two SU carbs on the left that have to stick through the bonnet and a bulge for the rocker box and the general scale of the car suggest a BMC A series or FWA Climax engine.
The wheels look like heavily drilled A30/A40 four-stud jobs.
Could be an early Lola Mk I but I think I remember an uninterrupted bonnet-top

You are both correct that this is a British car - but as you suspect, it's neither D-Type nor Lola related. This was a car that was offered to the public - but I concede, it's very obscure!

Thus, I conclude, it's a special? Previously British road car, then British sportscar with BMC or Climax engine, built in (late 50's - early 60's?)... Very interesting one, to be said.

A car built by a company.

By Costin I didn't mean make. I've read that he designed a 1964 Ford-engined car called Diggory and supposed it could be that one.

Amazing - it is the Rejo! That was one very obscure puzzle.
I've not heard it referred to as the Mk4, though, so I'll have to dig out my file about this car...

AAARRRGH - should have recognised it!
The Mark 4 was Climax-engined and didn't have the rough and ready bonnet top and steel wheels seen in the puzzle car:
