Q195 - solved - Gordon Murray's Minbug / Mini Buggy / Minibug
« on: February 07, 2009, 12:43:18 PM »
This one seems to have vanished off the site. Here it is back again. What's it called and which famous individual built it?

I think that this is the Mini-based special, designed and built by Gordon Murray in 1968.  Correct?

I don't know wich one, I found this name together with "Gordon Murray's spaceframe buggy" in a very-well-known site of mini derivates. I can't post the link, but there is nothing more than this...

OK I'm awarding the point to PJ. The most reliable source I know says this is the Minbug, but Mr Murray himself once described it as the Mini Buggy, and other sources do say Minibug, so PJ gets the point

The official name is indeed "IGM Minbug".
IGM stands for Ian Gordon Murray. Minbug is simply short for Mini Buggy.
Automotive journalist Jeroen Booij from Holland recently discovered the above car in quite a poor state.
The car had been poorly modified over the years, but the front end was still very recognizable. I was with Jeroen Booij when we picked up the car from the seller, who had advertised it as a 'Mini Moke replica'.
We arrived at the seller's house late in the evening, so it could have been difficult to identify the car in the dark, but we were quite sure it was one of four Minbugs made by Gordon Murray and his friends.
We loaded the car up to a recovery truck and drove to Gordon Murray the next day. We already had an appointment, so Gordon knew we were coming to show his car.
At first he was quite sceptical, because he had already given up hope to find one after looking for over 10 years...

On the way to Gordon Murray, Jeroen and I were discussing what to do with the car. We could restore it ourselves, or we could make Gordon very happy. Jeroen decided the second option.
Gordon was very happy to receive his oldest reviving car and he soon confirmed that this car was actually chassis 01, his very own car.
Gordon had been playing with the thought to produce a replica of his own Minbug for his new museum. Probably he still will, but now he has his own original Minbug to display as well.

I will post some pictures tomorrow.
