Solved - Name That Make #24: 1908 PMC (Peets)
« on: August 09, 2009, 03:52:35 PM »
For one point: Make & year.

This one's different because I have seen & photographed this very car myself (although this is not my photo of it). Also, I'm not asking for the name that it's exhibited under (which is the manufacturer's name) but the correct make name that's listed for it pretty much everywhere else!

I am not an expert as such, but I'd say that it is a high-wheeler with a steering wheel (as opposed to the more popular tiller).

International Harvester maybe?

Nope... right part of the world, but this is less well-known and much more short-lived.

Nope... still less well-known & more short-lived. And by "right part of the world" I meant "American." You've got the right time-frame, though.

These autobuggies or high-wheelers look very much alike. Though there are only a few with steering wheels. I just found another one: Menard Auto Buggy?

Nope.

Another hint: This make existed only during one calendar year, and this example is the only one still in existence.

Ahhh... you've hit on the "wrong" name given at its place of exhibition. But what is the make generally called elsewhere?

Holding for you for 24 hours.

That's it!

It seems that the manufacturer's nameplate (C. S. Peets Mfg. Co, New York, NY) on the surviving car has led to its being exhibited as the "1908 Peets," but contemporary references to the make list it as the PMC. No one knows how many were made, but this car is "No. 33."

This is undoubtedly the most obscure make I've personally gotten to see "in the metal." I will post my own pic of it when I get the chance.

Here is my own pic of the car, taken earlier this month.

Just came across this contemporary pic of a 1908 PMC. I wonder if this was a totally different model or if the surviving car lost some parts (convertible top, running boards, lights, etc.) somewhere in its history?
