Art and cars #19 - Solved! Charles Addams, car-toonist
« on: April 06, 2009, 01:47:14 PM »

Who is he, and what car can he be associated with?

Art and cars. Painters, writers, musicians, actors, movie makers: in a nutshell, artists. Cars of special importance in their work, or in their life.
This one is a 2 point puzzle.
Rule of this puzzle is: you identify the artist, you have one week to find the car. After that, the hunt is opened and anyone can rob you of your point.

If you haven't registered yet, you need to do so in order to reply with your answer.
Also, please be sure to check out our other puzzles, and, please post a puzzle of your own if you'd like - the more, the merrier.

Thanks!

The lovely lady has been replaced by this fellow above, you didn't dream her.
I have been warned by Otto P. that, in this big world, we had managed to use the same dame for our arty puzzles. So I changed, and of course I won't guess his if it ever makes it to the pro section.

It's not denial, I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

Not a director. Not a painter "stricto sensu", but this is closer.

Is that Alexander Calder, the artist credited with creating the first 'mobiles', and also of BMW "Art Car" fame?

In a way, Paul Jaray is the closest when it comes to the man's profession.

That's Charles Addams, the cartoonist.  He died of a heart attack behind the wheel of his Audi

Edit - spelling corrected

YES !
I think this one was quite hard, as these cartoonists' face is not often known.
But the Audi is not the car I am after. Not to say that it's common to die of a heart attack in an Audi... I am after something more special for this second point.

Addams raced in car rallies in Bridgehampton and Sagaponack and collected vintage cars, including a 1933 Aston Martin Le Mans.

I'll take the Aston Martin. Here are some others.
I am curious: how did you find him? Did you just recognize him, or did you follow my Yvonne DeCarlo-Carolyn Jones clue?

As usual, I took the long way home.

I suspected ftg3plus4's puzzle was a cartoonist (before somebody else picked up his clues), and looked at bios of one cartoonist after another. Then I found the very picture you had posted above, in a blog entry about Addams.

All right. The clues that you yourself and streamliner unvoluntarily gave for this one, in the Art and cars puzzle with the girl dancing on a car, were Carolyn Jones, who played Morticia in the TV adaptation "The Addams family. And Yvonne DeCarlo, who played Lily Munster in the rival and Addams-inspired series "The Munsters".

I rather enjoy the long journey to the solution - which often involves stumbling across the answer by accident - more so than knowing the answer (or where to find it) right off the bat.
