It looks very much like a Frank Kurtis Custom (the front is very similar to his 1941 Buick), but I can't find which one.

How does one now exactly when an MGA has been over-inflated?

Not a Kurtis, a Buick, nor an MG.

The first two are closer in size and specification than the latter...

It's a 1946 Custom bodied roadster. The car is lost and there is little information about it. Two or three were build, with small differences. According to the publication below, the body was called "The Comet" and could be fitted to a Ford chassis.

Mostly correct - but it did have a name, other than 'Comet'.

You're a lucky man! Did you find it elsewhere? Where I did it's only this "1946 Custom Bodied Roadster", which is not really a name. Or a Comet speedster.

Your photos are the same; however, the captions neither confirm nor contradict the info I have - so, one may indeed have been named Comet. The name I have listed for the lighter-toned car is printed in quotation marks, so it may have been a seller-created appellation:

The point is yours, unless somebody else can prove you wrong.

Incredible!
I found it in Rik Hoving's collection, and he said he knew nothing else about those cars (and if somebody should it seems it should be him). I forwarded him your link. "Comet" came from Dan Post Blue Book of 1949. That doesn't mean it's right. Maybe there never was an official name. It might be Comet in California and Champion Award in Michigan (the ad is for a second hand car).
Here are the links to the Rik Hoving pages:
