Can anyone tell what this vehicle which is sorely lacking in protection from the elements is?

That would be the 12-15 h.p Arrol-Johnston motor car that Shackleton took on his Antarctic expedition in 1907-9. The driver is probably Bernard Day, who within a year later was back in Antarctica in charge of the Wolseley motor sledges on Scott's last expediton
