Q#30 - solved - Dr Who's Whomobile based on Bond 875
« on: May 18, 2008, 06:03:36 PM »
What's this car - or equally, who drove it?

One bonus point for identifying the car that it's based on

This is the Whomobile, or Alien, by Peter Farries, from the Doctor Who TV series.

That's correct, well done - as driven by John Pertwee in the TV series.

Now for that extra easy point - what was the car that the Whomobile was based on?

Well, the engine at least was Hillman Imp, circa 1973: http://www.imps4ever.info/specials/whomobil.html

But it was a three-wheeler, which the Imp was not.  So either that was a special build or they used something like a Reliant Regal or Robin for a frame.

...And, according to the link I posted above, the car was built by Peter Farries in Nottingham in 1973, who called it "The Alien."  But, if only one point is to be given out, it should be to Ray B.

There's a clue there...

This is what 3wheelers.com says about it, but I don't see that it was based on a particular vehicle.

What happens when you join an Imp engine with a three-wheeler (apart from going through a hedge sideways, roof first)?

You get a Bond 875 IIRC
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

Bond 875 is correct - so Allan L gets the bonus point
