Pre-Great War 3: Wanderer 12 PS prototype
« on: January 11, 2008, 07:48:15 AM »
This puzzle is one of a set of three. If you can identify any of them, there may be a clue to solving the other two, but I won't say more yet.

Since you said there was a connection between the three puzzles it could maybe be German?

One of these three is solved, and no-one's twigged the clue referred to at the beginning (althought there has been a bit of digging in this one) - shame on you!

Not NSU
Two of the three are now solved, so there should be a clue to help with this one if you see what the others are ;D

That's why I was guessing NSU... there's an obvious Auto Union/Audi connection there, but I don't know if that's what you're after. Thing is, the marques that have disappeared into Audi are Auto Union, NSU, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. DKW didn't venture into automobile manufacturing until near 1920, Wanderer just after 1910 - and this car appears to be earlier than that. The other two puzzles were Audi and Horch. Of course, it could be one of those, but I'm thinking that if this is the clue you're talking about, you would have included three different marques.

And then there's the possibility that the link is that all three cars were owned by German royalty.

This looks like the Wanderer Nr.2 (12 HP), built in 1904 as it can still be seen in the Dresden Motor Museum.

It was the second prototype for the coming car production.

I´ve just found out that there even was an Espewe model car from the GDR:

Yes it's the 12 PS Wanderer of 1904 or 1905 depending what you read.

The connection was solved by @re but with a few errors!

The Auto Union was formed from DKW, Horch, Wanderer and Audi - and my three were the only pre-Great War constituants as DKW was not founded until 1928.

@re writes of AU disappearing into Audi which it more or less did in recent times but there is circular reasoning in that.
NSU was only involved as it was taken over by Volkswagen after the Ro80 drove it bankrupt and VW also took over Audi in 1964 (well the Dusseldorf firm of that name, which also had produced cars under DKW and AU names).
Confusingly Audi cars now carry the Auto Union four-ringed badge.
