Cars and drivers that won the British GP 1950-58
« on: August 07, 2008, 12:08:38 PM »
I hope that there will be nine cars and seven drivers for you to identify. The drivers in the car photos are not necessarily the same as those to be associated with the cars.
If you can associate drivers with cars with a year for each association, you may find there is an overall matter that they have in common.
My apologies to North Americans, for most of whom this will be rather more difficult than it is for Europeans (and South Americans!)

So far so good - yes to all those, and you have enough for five pairings which might (a) give you the common matter which in turn will (b) help you with the other pairings.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I have the answers,

Car 5 is a Ferrari 553, I'm not that confident about that but I worked it out with my thinking on what the connection is.
Car 6 is a Ferrari 500
Car 8 is a Ferrari 375

Driver 5 is Jose Froilan Gonzalez
Driver 7 is Tony Brooks

The link (I think) is that they were all winners of the British GP from 1950-58

1950 Farina in an Alfa
1951 Gonzalez in a Ferrari 375
1952 Ascari in a Ferrari 500 (Car 1)
1953 Ascari in a Ferrari 500 again (Car 6)
1954 Gonzalez in a Ferrari 553?
1955 Moss in a Mercedes
1956 Fangio in a Lancia-Ferrari
1957 Brooks in a Vanwall
1958 Collins in a Ferrari Dino

I should have walked this one, although my strongest area in F1 is the sixties, rather than the fifties.
And, Ferrari is not my strongest marque. But here goes, largely off the top of my head:

Car 1 - driver 4
Car 2 - drivers 1 and 3
Car 3 - drivers 6 and 7 (Driver 7 being Tony Brooks)
Car 4 - driver 4
Car 5 - driver 2
Car 6 - drivers 1 and 4 (1954 Ferrari 625)
Car 7 - driver 2
Car 8 - driver 3 (The Ferrari 375 raced at Indianapolis)
Car 9 drivers 1 and 6

While I was typing Neilshouse jumped in, so I guess he beat me to it

The following are correct - well done Neilshouse (and Pieter).

Car 1 - Ferrari 500                                             Neilshouse
Car 2 - Lancia Ferrari D50                               Neilshouse
Car 3 - Vanwall                                                  Neilshouse
Car 4 - Alfa Romeo 159                                   Neilshouse
Car 6  -Ferrari 500                                            Neilshouse
Car 7 - Ferrari 246 Dino                                  Neilshouse
Car 8 - Ferrari 375                                           Neilshouse
Car 9 - Mercedes W196                                 Neilshouse

Driver 1 - Juan Manuel Fangio                      Neilshouse
Driver 2 - Peter Collins                                   Neilshouse
Driver 3 - Alberto Ascari                                  Neilshouse
Driver 4 - Nino Farina                                     Neilshouse
Driver 5 - Jose Froilan Gonzalez                  Neilshouse
Driver 6 - Stirling Moss                                  Neilshouse
Driver 7 - Tony Brooks                                   Neilshouse

The link (I think) is that they were all winners of the British GP from 1950-58 (Neilshouse)

1950 Farina in an Alfa                                     Neilshouse
1951 Gonzalez in a Ferrari 375                     Neilshouse
1952 Ascari in a Ferrari 500 (Car 1)             Neilshouse
1953 Ascari in a Ferrari 500 again (Car 6) Neilshouse
1955 Moss in a Mercedes                             Neilshouse
1956 Fangio in a Lancia-Ferrari                   Neilshouse
1957 Brooks and Moss in a Vanwall           Pieter
1958 Collins in a Ferrari Dino                       Neilshouse

All that remains is to assemble the correct 1954 combination - the correct bits are there but not actually paired.
Points will follow when it's complete!
Shall I try something similar from a different (probably earlier) period?

The 1954 British GP was won by Froilan Gonzalez(driver 5) in a Ferrari 625 (car 6).
What else do you need?

Yes, I enjoyed this one, though earlier than the fifties would be much more difficult for me.
Thanks!

You are of course quite right, but just check the Car number again for the Ferrari 625!

Glad you enjoyed it.

A bit of a pun, that.

While I didn't get to play, this was a great puzzle - more, please!

Was the Ferrari 625 car number one?

If you look at the checklist about five posts up, you'll see the missing one.
Neilshouse identified it as a 553 (which it isn't)
The two 500s (1 and 6)  seem to me identical, but the photos were from the years in question, just in case I'd missed a subtle change.

You got the catch question (1957 when there were  two drivers) and the non-obvious one which we are debating in this post (one of the two GPs in 1954 not won by Fangio and one of the two won by Ferrari).
I think 9 points in total, 7 to neilshouse and two to pieter

I think we'll call this solved now.

The 1952 Ferrari 500's generally had stub exhausts

Ah, thank you!
Both the photos above were of the inlet side so you can't tell that from them.
