A mid 70's Vauxhaul or Aussie Holden variant, perchance?

You are on the right track - not a Vauxhall or Holden though. Not Australian.

This looks like a Ranger, a GM sub-brand produced in South Africa (68-73) and Belgium (70-77), and also sold in Switzerland (70-71). The number plate suggests this is a South African vehicle and I think this version was known as the 153 2500SS Hardtop Coupe. All models were based on the Opel Rekord but used some parts from other GM models.

I knew it was too easy for the experts!

Yes, it is the Ranger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranger_(GM)

It was essentially an Opel with a Vauxhall grille. Fred Schnetler in his book 'A century of cars' said that it had the Chevy II engine.
It was advertised as 'South Africa's own car'.
