It looks like somebody  took a 1970 Thunderbird [ one of my favorite designs of that era...] and grafted on the grille of a 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark lll [ one of my all-time hated designs...].  It looks a little clumsy, but not nearly as bad as the '72-'76 T-Birds did...

I'm wondering if this was an in-house design study for the '72 and later 'birds...

No, this was a dealer installed option for Thunderbirds of that era.

Well, that did make it a lot easier. This would be the 1971 Ford Thunderbird Mark T, a special option available from 1971 to 1974.

I agree, but that car must be the prototype, because it's a 1970 model...the roofline and rear quarter panels are different on the '71 models.  They might have been more formal, but the 1970 had more fluid lines, IMO...

'71 two-doors could be ordered as a formal (Landau) or fastback (Hardtop).
