Another Indy 500 Puzzle <SOLVED> Rudy Caracciola

I'm looking for a driver of international reknown who was entered in the 1946 Indianapolis 500.  Unfortunately, he was critically injured in a practice accident, when it was believed that a bird hit his car, causing him to lose control and crash.  The injuries he suffered effectively ended his career.  Can you name him?
