can anyone identify what it was?

I don't know where it was manufactured, but it appears to have been used in the northern US.

Certainly looks like the special Alfa Romeo breed of tin-worm that I encountered as two AlfaSuds rusted away under me!

Was that trunk lid originally shaped like that or is that a "custom" job?
