Puzzle #156 - Solved! Ford Mustang II Proposal
« on: December 30, 2006, 05:43:51 AM »
Obviously a styling buck, this study was an attempt to incorporate upcoming 5 mph bumpers into a car's design without hanging a huge chromed slab to the front. The production car that debuted after this and many other styling proposals were built - some of them quite attractive and striking - looked nothing like this, thank goodness. But the car introduced was nonetheless derided by critics for its appearance.

ID the make and model this was a styling proposal for. Know what it is?

Along Abingdon's lines, I would suggest by the wheels (which look very Pontiac) that it was a proposal for the Grand Am.

I'm gonna say early '70's Cadillac Eldorado styling buck...that rear fender line suggests it.

I'll bet it's a Chrysler styling proposal for the Dodge Diplomat or Chrysler LeBaron.

Not a Dodge Diplomat or Chrysler LeBaron.

This car was a proposed replacement of an existing model, versus a yet-to-be-introduced car.

Ford Mustang.

Bingo!

In the late 1960's / early 1970's, Ford spent countless man-hours on a variety of proposals to replace the venerable and highly-successful Ford Mustang. Styling proposals were trotted out in large numbers, and included swoopy italianesque designs with light greenhouses, a few predictable updates on earlier themes, and some truly awful examples like this one which, amazingly, wasn't ripped off the drawing board and burned.
