In the Spotlight: Grobmotorix
Recently, Grobmotorix sat in the AutoPuzzles hot-seat and shared with us his automotive background, interests, and humor.
AP: Tell us about
yourself and when you became interested in cars?
Grobmotorix: I was born in 1972 near Rothenburg ob der
Tauber/Bavaria and I was told afterwards that "Auto" seems to have been one of
my very first words...
AP: What was your
first car?
Grobmotorix: Citroen AX LeNoir, 1989
AP: What is your
daily driver?
Grobmotorix: Opel Astra Caravan, 1993
AP: What
classic(s) or special cars do you currently have? What made you choose to buy
it?
Grobmotorix: None
AP: Have you

it?
Grobmotorix: Jawa 1938 600ccm 2 stroke convertible / Mercedes 300E
W124 Station Wagon / Citroen Ami 6, all real bargains,
but...
AP: What would
be your dream car?
Grobmotorix: Phantom Corsair
AP: Which car
do you regret having parted company with?
Grobmotorix: Ford Sierra Turnier 2.0i
DOHC
AP: What is
your favorite drive in your classic or special car?
Grobmotorix:
Autobahn /
AP: How much
work on your car(s) do you carry out yourself?
Grobmotorix: Everything I can do, but I don´t want to,
either...
AP: What do you
carry with you go out in your car(s)?
Grobmotorix: 250 year old iron bolts from Belgium, piles of scrap,
loads of old tapes, a cd-radio I didn´t have the time to install.
AP: Do you get
involved in the club scene, and why?
Grobmotorix: I am only involved in the literature collector´s
scene, cause I´ve started with it when I was 8 years old. I´ve collected ca.
25.000 different sales brochure from ca. 1920-today. Now I´ve switched over to automotive
books and digital pics (ca.100.000 different in ca. 5500 files) and talking to
people on the internet that ask strange questions like those here and
identifying old pics of boring old cars...
AP: Do you take
an interest in motor sport, and if so where is your favorite venue(s)/club
meeting(s)?
Grobmotorix: I like rallye and autocross events, current and
vintage.
AP: What is
your worst memory involving a car?
Grobmotorix: Driving back from work at night through the deep
bavarian forest I drove through a curve and after it I saw the lights of a car
approaching. 100 m before we´d pass the 2 light changed into 4 and there was no way for
3 side by side so I had to go into the green. I had very much luck and was able
to drive home with my slightly damaged car after being towed out of the
mud.
AP: What is
your funniest memory involving a car?
Grobmotorix: Changing the outer left (and only free lane of
three)driving lane on the Aachen-Düsseldorf Autobahn within an construction site
at 120 km/h at night to give way to an Emergency Vehicle that came up from
behind. Problem was it was a construction site and there was no more other
driving lane...I managed to stop the car in a more or less controlled way, the
left 2 wheels on the asphalt of the still existing outer left driving lane and
the right wheels 50 cm lower in the construction
hole.
I had much luck, some other workers managed to lift my car out of the hole with an excavator
and I drove home with my slightly damaged Sierra. I never looked under it after
that incident. No rattles no problems. 1 year later I gave it to the
scrap...
AP: What is
your most enjoyable moment involving a car?
Grobmotorix: Once I
had a crazy ride on the Autobahn between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Würzburg
in
Nobody else drove there and I had a 160 km/h hell-ride, the
falling snow in the glow of my
front lights made me feel like Luke Skywalker going with hypersonic
speed.
There had been some other scenes,
too...
As a ten year old we were allowed to drive around in a rear
engined old Simca 1000 at the scrapyard of a friend father. It ended up in a
ditch after some minutes, totally shattered and destroyed by three kids that had
a terrific day. but I don´t want to destroy too much useful webspace, so I´d
better stop here with the most enjoyable moments in a
car...
AP: Best road
food?
Grobmotorix: Turkish Kebap house at Nuremberg´s
Friedrich-Ebert-Platz at Bucher Straße. Best Börek
ever...
AP: How would
you define a 'classic'?
Grobmotorix: A combination of style, design, sometimes drama,
sometimes perfection. There are many cars I´d define a classic, others I
wouldn´t.
So "classic" is mainly used as a mainstream word for those cars
with prestige and/or legendary
creators/owners/stories.
AP: What in
your opinion, is the worst car regarded as a 'classic' and
why?
Grobmotorix: East German Trabant. Just watch old films how they
were produced or take a deep breath when one passes you
by...
AP: What in
your view will be a future classic?
Grobmotorix: Fiat Multipla, first
version.
AP: What
question would you like to ask and who to?
Grobmotorix: "It´s cold in the Bugatti - so, will you wear your
silk scarf ?" I´d ask that to Isadora Duncan.
AP: What car
publications / car websites do you regularly read?
Grobmotorix: www.flickr.com, www.seriouswheels.com and www.emercedesbenz.com.
