My little archive can't compete with yours, but as I think of the horrible work to keep it well organized not to mention to build it up... Hold on!

It started 15 years ago, while I was at school. I made a short list of all the sports car (BMW , Ferrari, Lamborghini...). Then I said to myself, let's add also the sports car, GT and so on. I used a PC (it was an old McIntosh) and started a bigger list. I was collecdting magazines, so I took from there the cars. It crashes a lot of times. Every time I started again, including something more. At the end I start to put in this index all the cars in my magazines, and in the meantime my collection of books was increasing. Now I listed 40.000 models only from my books and few encyclopedias. I quit with the magazines after the Big Crash of '98! Now my magazines are thousands and I will start soon to add them in the index, because there are a lot of cars in small articles of my 1950's issues. I started collecting pictures from the web few years ago, but it was different, just a collection of weird cars. If I match the 5500 makers on my list with the 4400 of my folders, probably there are 7000 different makers! All this without considering the BIG books (like the Beaulieu Encyclopedia or the Standard Catalog) where there are thousands and thousands of entries! But I will add them all!

Damn that's impressive...

I did/do something very similar. Please feel free to use my work as a reference, you can find it at http://www.carfolio.com/

I know there are many gaps, but my aim is to catalogue the technical specs of every standard production car ever made, as well as coachbuilt bodies and official concepts and prototypes. Kit cars and modified cars are excluded.

This subject seems to have some legs. 'Life events' prevented it from moving forward, way back when. But with all of these great folks working on it, I think it an achievable and worthy endeavor.

I'd be happy to organize everyone's content into a cohesive format. I'm open to ideas on format, etc.

Thank you very much!
I know your site very well, (who doesn't?) and I spent a lot of time in it!
My work started as a simple index, because sometimes I'm looking for a precise car, I know I've got somewhere but I'm not able to locate it. In my index there are all the cars, racing, prototypes, one-off, concepts, kit-cars, buggy, that are featured in any of my books-magazines-encyclopedias. When I'll finish this (NEVER!) I'll fill in the gaps, with the cars that I know they exists but aren't in any of my books (like a lot of the cars from Autopuzzles!).

The link is not working anymore....
I'd like to see that index, and I will check my A list  (900 makers) with it...we can make the biggest list ever!

I believe this conversation is on how to make a gigantic, but rather complete encyclopedia on the web. In a few weeks' time I will see how my 2010 shapes up and then I'll be happy to discuss this project further, as this type of encyclopedia would be my childhood dream coming true.

In the meantime:
- would this project be a part of AutoPuzzles or would it be a separate project? Like worldcar-catalog.com, worldcarinfo.com - I have some domain names which will we can use from next year
- Who'd do the background programming work? Ultra or someone else?

Sometimes I can't stop myself thinking about various projects and this morning, it was 'bout this one. It could be a real nice resource, with photos, sources (indication of magazine article, website etc.) and a keen eye on protecting copyrights.

Let's hear some feedbacks :)

Pnegyesi, you read my mind.
I did not only dreamt of it, I actually started doing my little part to have it done more than 10\15 years ago:
I started with all my books and magazines, and I sorted all the manufacturers, with the models and tech spec in a huge list. This list is growing of hundreds (hundreds!) of makers per week, and it is now at about 7400 makers, but they are mostly old ones: I still have no books covering modern cars, and I'm sorting magazines starting from the 50s.
I am aslo collecting pictures, of each vehicle can be considered like that, homebuilt, one-off and so on.
I have kept the link to the book or magazine article of each and every model I listed there.
My final dream will be to match this index of all the cars featured in my papers with the folders I have with all the pictures plus the amount of knowledge that is here!
The boring part is already done (I mean the list of the well-known, known, less-known and barely-known manufacture is ready) and now each one can try to add what he could!

Start by compiling a list, guys.  We can do this and I will do whatever I can to make it part of this group's lore.

I have a list.
When we started to talk about this project, I focused on the 'A' list, adding all I have...
I can upload this first part of the 'A' list (From "AAA" till "Arrow Locomotor") when you tell me where and how.
I don't think it is useful that each one of us start a list by his own...let's make a common one and add what's missing.

Any news about this Project? I have a list with 30,000 cars, sorted by country, that I think that could be useful to the project.

My list is far from complete. But at least I am aware of it. Since 1997 or thereabouts I have been busy trying to build this in one way or another. Amazing how much information is not on the internet (in 1997, at least where I am from, we said the internet) and how little of that has changed.

But feel free to use my list freely. There might be a name or two in there that you might not have not yet listed.

(and if you really have time to spare, you can tell me the mistakes I made in the ones that are there)
