At a guess, the son of one of the Silver Arrows drivers in the 1930s?

Not quite, but the pictured boy's father was a German racing driver.

Well the car is based on a 1938 A-U Rekordwagen so perhaps the photo is post-war and the boy's father was a post-war German racing driver, such as Hans Klenk
Opinionated but sometimes wrong

You are on the right path. The picture must have been made around 1946.

Hint: The boy would become a racing driver himself.

Well since Hans Stuck drove for A-U and Hans-Joachim was born in about 1951 it isn't H-J Stuck
Perhaps it's Kurt Ahrens Jr. born c1940. Kurt Ahrens Sr raced in speedway and junior formulae to that fits.
Oh, and the car he's in might have an oversize engine. . . .

Congratulations, it is six-year-old Kurt Ahrens jr at the wheel. The engine was an Ilo, so it wasn't oversized, I guess.
