Early '80s, Ron Wharton's, Automotive Innovations built a number of these cars and tried to become licensed as an automotive manufacturer. They were based on Volkswagen mechanicals, but he modified them greatly with steel tube frames and different suspension components. They were called "Pop Top Can Cars" and he sold a number of them throughout the '80s.

Yes, this one is a Strohs Beer Can Car, which can actually be clearly seen on this photo, which is odd because you couldn't read it in the photo on my computer...  Big clue therefore!
