Hot Rods by Boyd

This past week marked the passing of a legend in the hot rod industry, Idaho boy made good Boyd Coddington. Coddington was not a car designer per-se, but like heads of some of the finest Carrosserie, Coddington hired the best and brightest designers and builders, many of whom went on the considerable acclaim in their own right. He was able to conceptualize some truly beautiful hot rods – an art form as uniquely American as jazz. His personal history of fabricating, panel-beating and welding his own cars by hand gave him the acumen to make sure the cars built by his shop were crafted to the highest levels of fit and finish.

Boyd's fame in later years came from his perhaps ill-advised TV show, American Hot Rod, a 'reality show' that spent a lot more time putting the interpersonal drama of his shop under the microscope, and, in this writer's opinion, not enough time on the cars.

Rather than re-hash the tumult and turmoil of his fallings-out with former protégés and his business woes, this is a photo tribute, AutoPuzzles-style, to some of the works that came to be as a result of his vision.

Rest in peace, Boyd. You'll be missed.
